A weighty issue

"We also believe in the 'what is beautiful is good' stereotype - an irrational but deep-seated belief that physically attractive people possess other desirable characteristics such as intelligence, competence, social skills, confidence - even moral virtue. (The good fairy/princess is always beautiful; the wicked stepmother is always ugly)"

Body image – a whole can of worms.

I have brought this topic up before but it is a major problem to so many.

I watched the programme about the fat beauty contest, yesterday was it? It left me with a whole heap of mixed feelings.

I have had a hang-up about my body image all my adult life since I was told by my grandmother that I was stout when I was in my late teens. I was a blossoming size 10 at the time. However having had two children has kept me in a constant battle with my weight ever since and size 10 is a very distant memory.

I watched the programme with curious interest really and to be honest I applauded the idea of trying to challenge society’s perception of beauty but we are still only looking at these girls’ outward aspect. I am all for the ‘empowerment of women’, for these big girls, but……

Women are already empowered anyway aren’t they?

In all honesty the idea of parading big girls around in a beauty pageant for plus sizes is as vacuous and mindless as plastering our magazines with ridiculous airbrushed pictures of painfully thin celebrities. Creating unrealistic ideals for a younger generation. We are drawing some very dangerous pictures for our children here. On the one hand we have the skinnies who for many young girls represent an impossible model to emulate. Cue some eating disorders. Now are were going to put the idea to them on the other hand that they can be beautiful because they are seriously overweight? Obesity is only too prevalent in our society now and a contributory factor to many life shortening conditions.

A whole big can of worms as I said!

not only did i watch that show but i've just posted a blog about it too, i don't think that it encouraged girls to be overweight, rather that they could still be attractive if they happened to be above size 14. i disagree with anybody judging others on appearances but sadly, it happens the world over on a daily basis.

Of course the most iconic sex symbol of the last century was a size 16.

I don't for moment think that it will suddenly encourage hundreds of girls to be overweight but unforunately obesity is becoming a serious problem in spite of this. I just feel that here we are focusing on image again and that is what is a real problem - if we could tackle that then I would consider that a very much more positive step forward.

is there a hope of tackling the image issue when so many millions of pounds and dollars are spent perpetuating it? the media puts way too much pressure on women when it comes to physical appearance.

Studies tend to show that men do judge women on appearance so I guess there is little hope for a change in attitude to image but there is always room for improvement in the way the media handles it. Sorry, no, that should read not much room for improvement.

I have to agree with you, it should be all about health, photographs of anorexic ill looking women is bad, who wants osteoperosis in later life, that's not sexy is it, but then so is making "fat" acceptable and even attractive, anyone who suffers with obesity knows it is not all laughs, with the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease stress on joints and back problems , not to mention the small niggling things like heartburn and just how difficult it is to exercise and besides not all fat women may be blessed with a pretty face aswell like the women on that programme. I see many overweight children and teenagers everyday worrying trend for the future health of that generation. What needs to be promoted is healthy sizes, but that is not ever going to be fashionable. Charlotte church is a healthy looking size, but she is slated in magazines as fat and greedy...what kind of message is that to children? In their mind food becomes a sin and so begins cycles of eating disorders.

I work for the NHS and every day I see facts and figures that are really very scary. The proportion of obese people increases by age group as the age lowers. There is a big problem somewhere down the line.
