Loneliness

by jojo52 @ 2006-03-28 - 23:15:30

“Loneliness is bad for the heart, suggests a new study. It shows that loneliness increases the blood pressure of those nearing retirement age to the same degree as smoking or a sedentary lifestyle.”

So feeling lonely is bad for your health. Not that that is particularly surprising of course, we are social creatures, we need human contact. We need to be attached to other people’s lives in some way.

“One may have a blazing hearth in one's soul, and yet no one ever comes to sit by it.” Vincent Van Gogh

“I wandered lonely as a cloud” - William Wordsworth. Are clouds lonely? I suppose some clouds have problems with isolation but you often see clouds in groups so they can’t all be feeling lonely. And of course “Behind every cloud is another cloud.” - Judy Garland.

Loneliness is a terrifying thing.

I've become so used to being alone all day that I've gone past the loneliness thing. Over the years I have cut down so much on social stuff. Being married means there's always someone physically there even if they are not emotionally there. This year it was rough over Christmas but I broke through it. If my PC died it would be a struggle though I guess.
And books help. Thank God for my eyes! *warm hug*

I think the computer is a lifeline for so many people these days. It has certainly been a good friend for me over the last couple of years and I'm sure I would have gone out of my mind without it. I find it interesting that technology that was feared to further isolate people from social intercourse has provided so many socially isolated people with a lifeline to humanity. You are never quite alone when there is someone else blogging!

I find it difficult being on my own at times, but it's all I've ever known. I loved the Van Gogh quote though...it perfectly sums up my situation.

Yes it must be very hard sometimes with much to offer and nobody to offer it to. I did think about you when I was writing this post, and I realised how many people there are around me. One of those count my blessings moments.
